As we move further into this new century, with its promise of regeneration and re-emergence, I am ever hopeful that the malaise gripping our planet will loosen its hold. I am reminded, however, of the wonderful and poignant message contained in a rock-and-roll classic by the Who entitled, “We Won’t Get Fooled Again.” The lyrics speak of an openness to change, and a fervent hope that the dreams and idealism of the 60’s and early 70’s will be fulfilled. The people are marching in the streets again — aging hippies, rejuvenated war protesters, outspoken philosophers and free-speechers, poets and mystics — to bring about a revolution in consciousness, a firm commitment to the principles of love and service being embodied by the new institutions.
Alas, such is not to be, and the refrain, “I get down on my knees and pray, we won’t get fooled again!” rings in my ears. For it is undeniably true that no matter who is elected to office, the same government always wins — “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.”
The Capricornian experience speaks of power and authority, government and the State, politicians and lobbyists. At the highest level, however, it speaks of government of, by, and for the people, rather than the self-serving, hypocritical and narrow-minded individuals that pass as our duly elected representatives. Indeed, less than 40% of eligible voters in the U.S. even exercise that right!
Is it merely apathy, or rather a deep understanding that the changes necessary will never come from or through the government? We can no longer rely upon others to do the work. What is now mandatory is to stand tall in our own truth and knowingness, and work in love and harmony with friends and neighbors to create the world we desire. Sounding our own individual note, we blend with the planetary chorus of awakened and awakening souls who are clear in purpose, honest in word and deed, open and receptive to the changing needs of every moment. Acting together in trust, caring, love and nurturance, we can, and do, make a difference.
