Phantom Quartz Crystal Healing & Properties Information
For what and How Does One Use it?
Phantom Quartz crystals are all about growth and moving on, moving past blockages.
On a physical level, these crystals are created when another substance other than Quartz washes over the crystal, leaving a layer on the termination during the crystal’s natural growth cycle. The crystal continues to grow, leaving an image of itself where it was at the time the substance washed over it. Phantoms can be made up of such minerals as Chlorite, Hematite, or even Clay. On occasion heat can play a part, causing a phantom to be visible through a different color shade. Most often either Smoky or Amethyst can display these heat-induced types of Phantom.
The most powerful phantom configurations are termed as being 3D. This is where the substance has totally covered the entire termination, leaving a three-dimensional image of itself.
Phantom crystals are very good for helping us move past blockages, where we may have become “stuck.” The type of inclusion that makes up the phantom also plays a part in the gifts that these special crystals have to offer us. They can also be used to project growth and plan milestones.
Hold a Phantom Quartz and visualize/remember a traumatic time in your life that you may perceive as having stunted your growth. Now see yourself actually becoming stronger through this experience. Let that experience become a marker, a testament to your strength, growth and perfection in that moment. Now bring that perfection and strength forward to the present day. Give thanks to the Phantom Crystal in helping you change your perception and facilitating your self-healing!

I submitted a comment back on 10/09/23 & haven’t received a reply. I got this Quartz Crystal at a Lunar Fair & had never seen Quartz Crystal like this after years of working with all types of crystals. Since waiting for a response I’ve taken time to do research on your site & believe this may be a form of phantom quartz with chlorite inclusions? I’m mesmerized how it formed a perfect 3D Pyramid at the base & appears that the pyramid is another form of mineral. I’m very excited to find out what this is but other than leaving my email address I’m not sure how to subscribe to the comments as recommended. I hope this arrives to u, as I have been anxiously awaiting!
Hi Allyson, I just got back from a trip down the south island of New Zealand. Your crystal started it’s early life getting layers of what could likely be white chlotrite thus forming the very cool phantoms! Another cool factor is that it shows the really interesting shape of the crystal as it grew!
A friend got this specimen from a small crystal shop in her town. They told her it was mined in Brazil and they had a whole backstory for the crystal. This crystal shop has been known to have high quality stones. They do have some man made stones but they disclose that to their customers. She was told by another friend it could be lab grown. We would like another opinion. Also, is there any tests we can do on the crystal to confirm if it is truly green phantom quartz?
Hi There, this cluster is 100% lab grown. I have started collecting them to do a video in the future.
I had just bought this Green Ghost phantom a week ago when I came across this website and I am curious to know if this is naturally grown?
This is grown in a laboratory sorry.
Do polished stones qualify for this page?
I found this guy over at a new age shop that opened up recently in my town, and it was rough and in the dish with a whole bunch of amethyst. I saw the arrows on it and assumed it was a chevron amethyst like the shopkeeper did, but when I got it home and started polishing it with some sandpaper and put some oil on it halfway through, the base was clear…
I'm convinced this thing is a phantom, but I can't find anything online like it. It's got no less than 5 different colors of quartz in it, including some amethyst at the top. I tested it against steel and it scratched it, and the crystal it came off of was originally 6-sided, so I'm sure it's quartz. Can you help? Thanks!
Hi Ariel, it is a little hard to tell from the photo, but it looks like it well could be a phantom quartz 🙂
You think so? I have another picture of it from the front, at an angle. Normally phantoms come in 1-2 colors, so what do you think caused this one to come in 5? Heat zoning, maybe?
Are you able to get a closer photo please? I do not think it is heat zoning.
Hello! My apologies for being so terribly late on responding, but I managed to get a much closer picture of the stone. My apologies for any stray black bits; I've been keeping it in a protective clay shell, and couldn't quite scrub all of it off; I heard the rose quartz it has inside it fades if exposed to sunlight too much.
Thank You for the great photo Ariel! Expanding the photo to full size I can see the Chlorite inclusions forming the phantom. It does have a look of fluorite with the red table coming through! But yes, Chlorite Phantoms in Quartz is my guess.
This is a rainbow Fluorite.
Can't be; it scratches a steel pair of scissors, and glass. I really need to get a better picture of it; I've since polished it more to a mirror sheen.
I bought this piece without the seller knowing what it was, I’ve tried doing a little research on it and only came up with phantom quarts. Can you confirm if it is?

It is a tricky one, it looks very much like a variety of Amethyst plate (can be very, very pale) from the location from Irai, Alto Uruguai Region in Brazil.
Comment *first off, this piece had no phantoms. a phantom is internal and shows the shape of the crystal when there was a pause in growth. it's included.
did the 'dealer' give you any info as to mine location? that could give a clue to what the inclusions are.
the quartz itself looks interesting and with ok clarity as it shows the color of your hand through it. not amethyst, anthony.
Hi Lin, Thank You for your comment. I’ll be standing by my claim. I have some photos of some of this material that I have sold in the past. The specimens I sold, were ones hand picked by me, primarily for their incredible flower form with the fused together laser wand formation. Of the many I did not get, were ones that were dead ringer for the OP sample. Complete with green celadonite both in and on it. In the OP’s photo that shows her hand, I can see the exact formation I describe, exact same green inclusions, and same unusual wavy form of etching that occurred more on the plates I did not purchase. The amethyst in most cases was very, very pale, but definitely had patches of amethyst coloring none the less.
This shot shows the incredible flower formation this family can at times form in.
This shot below shows the inclusions of celadonite in and on the specimen.
This is a photo of the entire specimen shown above – just because it is all sorts of awesome 😉
This photo kind off shows that wavy formation. The plates like the OP’s one had this etching in a more intense fashion, often on the back of the plate, rather than the points themselves as in the photo shown below.
There’s so many things going on in this crystal depending on different views. It was called gray phantom quartz at the store. Is that a type of Smokey quartz? There are pinkish red and some white lines also growing in addition to the secondary crystal inside. Any ideas about what these colored striations are? Also there are rainbows what are these? There’s also something that looks like a wall of striations that are different ghost like material. I’ll send additional pics. Thanks in advance for your help. 🙂
Erin
Hi Erin, yes this looks to be a light Smoky Quartz Crystal with Greenish Grey Chlorite inclusions with a handful of rutiles – whew! I’m thinking the pink could be either hematite or oxide inclusions 🙂

Hi Anthony, very interesting article which has helped me, thank you. I attach a pic of a smokey quartz freeform I just bought which appears to have a phantom tower in it. Do you think this is chlorite? Many thanks for your time. Kind regards Heather ✨️
Yes, I believe that is Chlorite inclusions forming the phantom.
Dear Anthony! Please help! What are these stripes /striations in my quartz?
Hi Sofia, this is referred to as a heat zone phantom, covered above…here is the text from the description for you. “Smoky Heat Zone Phantom Quartz Crystal – This Phantom has occurred while the crystal is under heat and pressure. This particular Phantom Quartz crystal also has “lots going on” with Chlorite inside and having smaller crystals massed on top of the termination. This would be a very good Quartz Phantom for people that need to stay grounded – all the while making changes – when experiencing high pressure situations and having chaotic forces swirl around them.”
Thank you! I was told this was a genuine citrine… Could this be just a radiated clear quartz or a heat treated amethyst? Think I was duped 🙁
It is genuine. Your crystal was originally from Zimbabwe and I have seen them that exact color straight from the mine. They are actually looking for Tourmaline at that mine and do not treat the quartz crystals very well – most are very damaged. That is why so much of this material is cut and polished, so the damage can be removed. So in short, your crystal is natural, it has just been cut and polished 🙂
Hi!
Would you mind helping me identify and understand the properties of this crystal? I’ve been getting mixed information about it, but I think it is green calcite. Is this accurate?
Comment
Hi could you take a larger resolution photo where the crystal fills the whole frame please? Right now I’m thinking it could be quite a number of different types of crystal. Thank You 🙂
Hi Anthony! I would like to share this clear quartz pyramid which has unique inclusions. Is this a phantom or a starbrary? Thank you!!
Hi Ele, these inclusions are called veils and mists (tiny dots of un-solidified quartz). The veils in your pyramid have particularly interesting patterns, well done on your great score!
Here’s another photo of the inclusions in my clear quartz pyramid. Thanks!
Hi! Here’s another photo of the inclusions in my clear quartz pyramid. Thank you!

Nice phantoms, and great rainbows too!
Hi! I have this pyramid. May I know if this is a phantom clear quartz or a starbrary? Thank you so much!
Hi, is this phantom Citrine Crystal?
Yes 🙂
Comment
I am wondering is this a phantom ?
Hi Nata, it is a veil 🙂
Thank you for you answer! I guess this is veil as well ?
Yes, a veil.
Veil phantoms, if complete, are as valid as other-inclusion phantoms, being in this case the shells of water and air bubbles instead of other minerals.
Agreed, though they are exceedingly rare.
This is my phantom candle quartz l recently bought; it wasn’t what l went in for, but l was drawn to it. I keep my crystals on a south-facing windowsill in the hope that they will benefit from all that glorious sunshine 🌞
Is this phantom quartz do you think? Appreciate your thoughts 🙏🏻
Hi Jools, it is a Fluorite Octahedron.
Hello. I was almost about to buy this. Sorry the last one i posted. Wasn't letting me comment with my picture. Plus i accidentally pressed send to. Any ways. I took a screen shot of this green phantom quartz crystal cluster. Something made me question it. Then i came along your page. And now i think perfect. Also. Now i am worried about a bunch i have already ordered. But this one made me question if it was real or not. Also. I want to say thank you in advance for your knowledge. Very appreciated. 😊
Hi Ruth, yes it is lab grown sorry. The coloration is green dye.
Here's another angle.
Hello! I'm new to crystals and wanted to know if my citrine is a phantom crystal?
Hello 🙂
I’m not seeing one, is there any way you could attach a photo with the sun or a light shining through the top third of the crystal please?
Hi, thank you so much for this information. 🙏
I linked a crystal that I have which sent me looking for help. I was told it is a phantom crystal with Hematite? I wanted to share because it is beautiful and looks like a sailboat to me. If you know anything about it I would be grateful.
Sky
Hi Sky, thank you for your comment, I’m not seeing a link, could you try posting it again please?
Hi, Anthony!
Just wanted to share photos of my phantom rainbow citrine. =)
It has one 3D phantom, at the bottom, and a total of 6 phantoms!
It came as a big surprise, as I have ordered it online just as a "rainbow citrine".
I have sent the photos to your email.
Thank you,
Polina
What a great surprise that would of been to receive! Thank You for sharing the photo. It is always interesting as the phantom shows the shape of the natural crystal before it was cut and polished, the best artists follow the original shape!
After a very dark experience which lead ultimately to a necessary death/release and truly opened my eyes; after much contemplation over the conclusions I had come to and the lessons I had taken away, I remembered a citrine point which had developed an odd inclusion I could not identify. As advised, I studied it once more and suddenly noticed, clear as ever- a phantom over the inclusion. I had only recently learned what they were; I had no clue one was in my collection nor do I remember this particular crystal including the phantom when I acquired it. It was perfectly clear; that’s why I was drawn to it. I decided to do some more research, and here I am feeling utterly grateful; furthermore, a renewed excitement over the magic of crystals has set in. I had to share. Love and light. ?
Hi Carlee, Thank You so much for sharing your magical and enriching experiences – very awesome!
Love and Light indeed!!!
