Smoky Quartz Crystal Healing & Properties Information
For what and How Does One Use it?
Smoky Quartz is almost the default crystal in any crystal healing layout. It is grounding and protective, and can transform negative energy into positive energy. As one friend put it to me, Smoky Quartz is good for humans, because we are currently quite murky beings ourselves!
It can also be found in Elestial form and on rare occasions, Cathedral formation. Smoky Quartz clusters can be found, but are really quite rare. Sometimes Smoky combines with Amethyst, which gives the benefits of both, as well as creating their own unique combined energy. Phantom Quartz crystals in Smoky are very powerful in breaking old patterns and blockages.
As an elixir Smoky Quartz can have great effect against radiation-induced illnesses. It purges toxicity from the major bodily organs. It is very good for reining in wayward emotions and helps one put things into perspective. Smoky Quartz helps keep us grounded while under great stress. It also is a great boost to the body’s immune system.
Smoky Quartz works very well in conjunction with Rose Quartz, Amethyst and Citrine. In some cases you can get Bi-colored crystals such as Smoky and Milky Quartz, which has a balancing effect in all yin and yang issues. There is also a tri-color Elestial family that has Smoky/White and Citrine Quartz. These are very powerful manifestation crystals and are unfortunately getting hard to find now.
It is a very joyful crystal. It is helpful to hold if you have other crystals that un-ground you such as Moldavite.
A lot of Smoky Quartz on the market is actually heated Clear Quartz. Majestic Quartz only supplies natural Smoky http://majestic-quartz.com/. For further information regarding irradiated smoky quartz, click HERE.

So I’m cleaning up my parent’s home where my brother lived. He’s gone to us now for a few years. He’s left behind a huge crystal collection. I’m proud to say I know I had so that to do with that love so I can identify a lot of it. However I have what I think is a smoky quartz but I’m stumped on what I think is just spray paint on it? I tried googling if that’s a thing and I definitely know about dying crystals and people who bake crystals but this definitely looks like a arts and crafts spray paint job of black and red paint. Is that a thing? I’m looking for your opinion, also if so can I clean it off? Any advice would help. Also if it totally ruined it, oh well, I found it behind a dresser in the front hall. No big deal.
Hi Emily, my condolences to you and your family.
The red material is iron oxide, which is very common to find on Quartz crystals. If in the states, there is a common product there called iron out. It can easily remove the oxides, thus cleaning the crystal 🙂
I have some rquestions on smoky quartz. Can smoky quartz sphere be transparent or clear? Not too sure if smoky quartz only comes in different shades of brown only. In comparison with colours , which colour tone is best when choosing smoky quartz?
Hi CC, yes a smoky quartz sphere can be either transparent, or opaque, or combinations of both. It has all manner of shades ranging from black, brown and grey, even golden smokies can be found. It really comes down to personal preference. Go for what you are drawn too 🙂
This quartz was found in an area where I have found many variations, including smokey and milky quartz. When doused in water, in shows a kind of clear, heart-like section. It looks like there is bit of pyrite trapped within. This gives it a sparking look when held in the direct sunlight. Can you explain how this pyrite got trapped and what it could mean. Also, can you explain why there is a variation in quartzes, from milky to smokey, in one particular mountain area?
It really depends on what minerals the volcano was spewing out simultaneously, then how long it took to cool down and the amount of natural gamma radiation was involved.
Hi,
Firstly, thank you so much for this website.
My question is in regards to the nutrients that are boosted by Smokey Quartz?
I am able to find this information.
Hi Shehani, Thank You for your question. Those would be all proteins, Vitamin B, and Vitamin E.
I got this information from a book I very much respect, that being Gem Elixirs and Vibrational healing volume one by Gurudas. Link to Amazon HERE
…another side of the quartz with a clear face that has the pyrite brilliance trapped within.
Great photos Danny. thank you for your awesome contributions!
I have a question about a crystal that I purchased at a large rock/stone store In Austin, Tx. I purchased it as a raw lemurian seed quartz from Mozambique. I know it is not as clear as others I have seen. I was very drawn to it though and so I purchased it.
I’m fairly new to crystals and the terms referring to them and the markers that would be an indication of fake /misrepresented ones. Could you give me some in sight to this stone I’ve pirchased?
Thank you for your time.
Hi Angie, thank you for sharing your question and video with us. This crystal does not really have anywhere enough striations (horizontal lines across the sides of the crystal) to be considered a Lemurian Seed. The shop may argue otherwise, as it could be deemed as being subjective how many lines a Lemurian Seed would require to be deemed one. But to my mind, that is not even close. That is not to say it is not a beautiful and very beneficial crystal for you to work with. Crystals come into our lives using many avenues.
A very important member of my family is intensively insisting that smoky quartz you don’t need it you don’t want it you should never have it in your life. Saying it will or could take things from my life and change things for the worse. I am having hard time wrapping g my head around it.
Hi Amanda, thank you for sharing. I can understand your discomfort in this matter. I have come up against a natural resistance to crystals of a darker complexion before. I will even admit to having my own insecurities towards them on my initial crystal path as well – borne of watching a few to many movies and scary campfire stories in my youth lol. I guess crystals have been placed by many in the realm of witch Craft and the occult, take a bow Hollywood and mystery book writers! So crystals in some circles carry this projection that has been placed upon them much the same way that black cats have had to carry a similar burden, even though they are just as loving and purrfect as any other puss!
When it comes to crystals, I defer to the following principle first before any other outside considerations. Only yourself can know which crystal is good for you – the simple caveat of “If you are attracted to the crystal, it will be good for you” is prime. No one else, no matter how much of an authority they (or even you) feel they may be has the right to overrule your own instinct. For the most part, these people are coming from view points of their own insecurities, misguided notions or desire to portray themselves in a elevated guru like way. They are entitled to their views as much as any other person, but their view should never ever override your own. You do not need to make a big deal of it with them, you can just quietly (but determinedly) go about your work with your crystals of choice without the need for any conflict. I’m not necessarily saying you need to hide your beautiful smokies along with last years unloved xmas gifts when they come to visit! Own your decisions with pride and grace and don’t feel the need to be influenced by non compliance of your relatives directives 🙂
On to Smoky Quartz themselves. My experience once I released my prejudgement has been the polar opposite of what has been projected upon them by the ignorati ;). I have found these crystals wanting to help draw negativity from me, so they can then either neutralize the energy or even transmute it to the positive. They can take our negative experiences, strip away the emotional attachment and then project back to us the actual positive lessons learned from these experiences in a way we could not see them before. The most beautiful softest energy I have ever experienced from Smoky Quartz crystals is from the darkest shaded one that I have in my healing collection.
I hope the above helps you find peace for your head and heart.
Love your website! I'd like your opinion on a few of my newer pieces. Pics sent to your email… But, first is a Carnelian Smoky Quartz pendulum that basically chose me! Hoping it's a genuine Carnelian and not heated Agate. Second, is my deep dark black Morion Smoky Quartz. It is translucent but only in the bright sunlight. Would that make a difference? Third, is a piece of Smoky Amethyst. I never seen anything like it before. Thanks a bunch!
Hi Anne, Glad you love the site! Thank you for your comments and questions here, and yes we did get your email thank you!
OK, the pendulum is heated Agate sorry. 99% of what is sold as Carnelian is thus. It is still a wonderful piece and I have no doubt it will serve you well.
The pure definition of A morion is that it is a very dark smoky, yet when a light is shone through it, it reveals itself to be ice clear inside (ice clear with color that is!).
It can be pretty tough finding a genuine crystal that actually lives up to the description banner it was sold under. Market places such as E-bay are the all time worst as many sellers first language is not English, and many sellers even when are told what it actually is that they are selling, then continue to deliberately mislead and misrepresent the crystals they sell. If authenticity is important, then I can not recommend highly enough that people find reputable sources that have high integrity for building up their personal crystal collections.
Hi, again! =)
I have bought a lot of small smoky quartz crystal points, and one of them had something black on it… What is that, and is there a way to clean it, somehow?… I tried to scrub it with a toothbrash but it didn't work.
I have sent you pictures to your email.
Thank you,
Polina
Hi Polina,
Sometimes you can scrape that stuff off with a knife, other times no. Usually it has hematite under it as well. If the knife does not work, then there is no real easy way to clean it. I’m not 100 percent sure what it actually is, possibly a mixture of graphite and Hematite.
Oh, ok.
My main concern was that it is something unnaturally dyed or something. I will try to scrape it with a knife.
Thank you!
Polina
It is most definitely natural 🙂
Hi, Anthony!
I've got a couple of new crystals. Those are my first rough crystals! They are both supposedly smoky…
One is very weird, in my opinion, as it does not feel smooth, at all. It feels like it's covered in something, yet it is shiny where it is chipped, as if it could be transparent, if polished, but currently is opaque on the outside. Also, all my other crystals have no scent, but that one does, though I am not sure of what… I have washed it with water and a bit of hand soap, but I don't think it changed much. Is that normal?… And is that considered smoky? It is very lightly brown. I bought it, because I liked how it is self healed on the bottom. It has lines on it, but also has some sort of "pictures" on some sides. Do you think I might ruin it if I try scrabbling it with a toothbrush?… It's got some dirt (sand or clay) on it. It was sold as "raw natural lemurian seed smoky quartz".
The other crystal, which was sold under the same title, is very dark, even black. It is transparent at some places, like the top. Though rough (unpolished), it feels relativly smooth. My concern is that since it is so dark, it might have been irradiated (unnaturally)… but perhaps it is a morion quartz, hence so dark?… Also, that one does not smell like the other. There is some very light scent, but I think it's coming from the medium on the side of it…. I've got a sensitive nose.😅
Anyways, I am sending the pictures to your email.
Thank you,
Polina
Hi Polina, Lets deal with the first Smoky you mention (see photo below). While I would not consider it a Lemurian, it is a very beautiful Smoky Quartz crystal with great etching! Ahhhhh, the smell. OK, A LOT of Chinese sellers on E-bay coat there crystals with oil before they take photos, it makes them look shiny and can also hide “crustyness” in some cases. They usually clean the oil off before posting them out to you, but some do it better than others, hence the smell some of them come with!
I feel the crystal posted below from the photo you sent me does have a fairly good chance of being natural, and not irradiated. It is nigh on impossible to tell what is and is not irradiated I’m afraid. But it looks and feels good to me. You can read more about irradiated Smoky quartz and the methods they use to do it on this Blog Post.
Some crystals to come with a dusting of other minerals on them, and some have just plain dirt on them. Some washes off, and others do not. Looking at the photo you sent below, I’m thinking that it looks calcite based and will not clean off, still a very nice crystal though!
And I just noticed on one of the other photos of Smoky Quartz that you sent me (see below) That one has a self healed bottom on it! Read more about Self Healed crystals HERE.
Hi, Anthony!
I've got 2 crystals. One a light- yellow colour, and the other a bit darker. Where is the border between citrine and smoky quartz? Are those two citrine crystals, or is one of them a smoky quartz?…
I am sending you the pictures to your email.
Thank you,
Polina Bikoulov
Hi Polina,
Thank You for the photos, please find one attached with captions!
To be honest, I have seen the border between smoky, Smoky Citrine and Citrine shift over the years, partially due to dealers wanting more money lol. However it does pay to keep in mind that a crystal is what a crystal is, and it is humankind that assigns labels – which at the end of the day does not alter the energy of the crystal itself! As an example, back in the day, Smoky Citrine was called Golden Smoky. Now that term is near extinct! The important thing is that one gets the crystal they are drawn too 😀
I found a piece of Smoky Quartz Crystal in a farm field in Morris, Connecticut.
